HIM is very straight-forward and the honesty is appreciated. These poems are pictures painted with words; it was eye opening that men can be found in the same situation as women.
This book showed me that they have similar emotional reactions to these types of situations, although taught to never express them. HIM is not only relatable, it is also insightful. Every page made me think back to previous relationships, re-evaluating my role and my interactions to see how I could have impacted past lovers in a positive or negative way.
The modern verbiage and relevance to current events (both personally and in society) made this an impactful read.
As I read Jeanty’s newest triumph, I had gained a much clearer, and refreshing understanding of men. I have had my fair share of heartbreak, and I’d always made the most effort to understand my partner’s perspective, let alone the perspective of men in general. Before reading HIM I thought I’d known the basics of a man’s mind, but I realized I had only scratched the surface.
One unexpected result of reading HIM (and other books by Jeanty) is that it encouraged me to pray for my future husband in an entirely different way. It challenges my thinking. Relationships are so complex, and Jeanty’s writing does a great job of capturing that complexity. I am hopeful – that what I and so many singles have been looking for – is out there, and that communication and vulnerability are possible. Pierre Jeanty has a way with words, and his words have the ability to bring healing, if you let them.
